Beginner best practices for WordPress SEO.

The best advice I've heard for dealing with search engines is from Brian Clark: "write as if search engines don't exist." It's true. Search engines don't like being pandered to, and most people greatly overestimate the importance of SEO tactics in general.

Remember, search engines are in business to please searchers first, advertisers second, and website owners a distant last. So don't expect Google to hand you a blank check.

That said, a little bit of SEO is worth it, if you know where to focus your time.

1. Having an online authority vouch for your content by promoting it to their audience pretty much dwarfs every other SEO strategy you might apply.

2. All you need to do when starting out is take a quick glance at URL, Title and Metadescription before you publish to make sure each clearly communicates what your post is about. If you forget, no big deal.

3. Install and use WordPress SEO by Yoast plugin, for free, and be done with it. Think of it as practice for writing adwords advertisements for your content.
