First Date conversation: Dos and Don'ts

Regardless of how you met, you should never ask about the other person's age, especially not on the first date. If things go smooth you will get to know more in time. Asking about age etc shows that you are fishing from a list of pre-determined requirements.

Asking details about sisters could back fire although in general showing the caring side and an interest in her family could get your score better.

Most people dress up for first dates and try to make a good impression. If she is well dressed and looks great, has done her hair well or has a nice pair of shoes on, a compliment from you can show her that you appreciate the effort she put into it all. This can also set a great tone for the date and encourage bonding.

A lot of guys think they need to come across as hopeless romantics to woo a girl. But it is simply a bad idea to even talk about love or bring it up during the first date conversation. Don't ask your date what he/she thinks about love or marriage and finding the one. This is about knowing each other and figuring out whether you two can take things ahead.

Focus on being friendly and interested in your date.

The last thing someone wants on a first date is to discuss ex boyfriends or girlfriends. Even if you are curious, just give it a rest till you get to know the other person better.

Small talk in the start, makes it easier to carry a conversation.

A good conversation can also be about your and his future plans. Be careful though, this doesn't mean you pry into his personal plans like marriage and kids. This is about professional plans and personal development, like pursuing the dream of becoming an artist etc etc.

Remember though, even if you don't like his/her plans, you should be polite and not criticize or outright dispute them. It's your first date, don't make rash decisions.

Do you have pets? How many siblings do have? Where you have traveled to or what books do you love to read? Forget about all these annoying things and counteract by asking your date for some fun. However, this doesn't mean that you ignore something in particular if your date catches your interest and talk upon it.

A safe bet and a good way to have an engaging conversation is to talk about what interests your date. Ask him/her about her music preferences, favorite movies, political views, memorable book reads etc etc. Once you start, new topics will spring up automatically and the conversation will start to flow.
