First Job Interview Advice

Don't be late or just on time. Be there before time so you can calm down, sit, wait, relax and soak in the atmosphere. If other candidates are waiting with you, you will also get the opportunity to observe people and gather your own thoughts. If you rush for the interview, get there just on time, or worse, late, you can't blame anyone but yourself.

You might feel nervous but you must not start fidgeting, shaking your leg or closing your hands shut. Keep yourself relaxed and behave normally. It is a job interview, the worst that can happen is that they will politely decline, but if you appear nerve wrecked, you will surely not get the position.

Laughing is generally not professional. Even if the interviewer throws a joke at you, you can respond with a big smile. If you laugh, you won't be considered serious or responsible enough to work professionally.

If you go to an interview looking like you woke up on the wrong side of the bed then you might as well forget about attending all together. Dress smart but sometimes i feel that its good to be in the middle. Dont be all 'suit and tie' as that gives off the impression that you're just a one hit wonder. Show that your dress sense reflects you as a person regardless if you're in an interview or just going for a drink. So dress smart AND casual and dont overdo either. Nowadays people like to see a candidate stand out and show some personality that can be used for the company. Make yourself look natural and genuine and that will surely work in your favour!

I once made the mistake of wearing shoes that click on tiled floors and it was so embarrassing when I walked into the interview room. Even in the hall, everyone kept looking at me, and consequently I was nervous throughout the interview.

Eye contact is important, especially in your first interview because you will naturally be nervous. Just remember, looking at the person who is talking to you signals that you are attentive and confidant. Make sure you maintain eye contact with your interviewer, or any other people on the panel when they ask you questions.
