How do you know which shampoo is best for you

I basically have silky hair and im wondering how people select shampoos which suit them. Do you read the ingredients or labels or just try different ones till you find one you like? Also doesn't it hurt your hair to try different shampoos regularly?

If your hair is shiny, dry, rough, got dandruff, short, long, mid-length there are so many shampoos on the market.

For example I use head and shoulders original, I'm a male with short hair I do not suffer from dandruff but my hair tends to fall out very easily - this particular shampoo says "strong roots"
