permalink The Izod IndyCar Series is the United States' top-level open-wheel racing category, and is the latest incarnation of a sport that throughout its long history has consisted of several different eras and sanctioning bodies including USAC, CART, Champ Car and IndyCar. The Indianapolis 500 is the crown jewel of its annual schedule, which consists of a mixture of road courses, street circuits and oval tracks. Drivers vie for both a road/street course championship and an oval championship, as well as the overall season championship. The series also features a Triple Crown challenge, which pays $1 million to any driver who manages to win the oval races at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Pocono (Pa.) Raceway and Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Calif.
