How to Give a Job Interview via Skype

I have been applying for jobs out of the city and I was hoping to give Skype interviews to save travel costs and time. Have any of you tried this before? I was also wondering how I should be seated and whether wearing a headset is considered unprofessional. Thanks for any help guys.

Tip 1 - Be particular about background noise even if it is not very loud

Even if you don't have a lot of background noise you might not realize that mics pick up even the faintest of sounds. If you are at home, make sure you close all windows and the door to your room if you don't want your interviewer listening things you'd rather he didn't.

Tip 2 - Keep the background clear

If possible, sit with a clear wall to your back. If you have a window behind you, the light coming in will make it harder for the interviewer to see you. Make sure there are no distractions or movement behind you either.

Tip 3 - Don't wear a huge headset

Huge headsets should be avoided, especially for professional interviews. Instead, you can get a small earpiece with a built-in mic. These are not only cheap but are also used professionally around the world. Using a large headset runs the risk of making you look casual and non serious.

Tip 4 - Switch Off or Put Your Phone on Silent

It can be very rude and unprofessional if your phone starts ringing while you are giving an interview over skype. It is better to put your phone on silence so that even if you receive a call it doesn't ring in for the interviewer. However, if you can switch it off altogether for the duration of the interview it would be better.

Tip 5 - Dress formally even for a Skype interview

Even if you are giving an interview on Skype you need to dress formally. The best part though is that you can be wearing a dress shirt and tie on top with your boxers underneath and no one will know!
