Who Is Covered under Your Homeowners Policy?

Homeowners insurance covers your home and other structures, as well as your personal belongings. It also protects you against liability claims. The named insured--the person primarily insured under the policy--receives the most coverage. But if your spouse lives in the home, he or she is covered by personal property and liability insurance, even if he or she is not identified in the policy. Relatives living in your home (and meeting certain qualifications) are covered, as are employees, guests, and invited visitors, but you'll need separate insurance for tenants. An in-law apartment may or may not be covered by your homeowners policy.
