As winter approaches, Richard Stone of the University of Minnesota Extension can drive through a neighborhood and predict who's likely to get ice dams when the snow falls. He's looking for telltale signs of insufficient insulation, inadequate ventilation and open spots where heat leaks through a house's ceiling and warms the roof from below.
