I want to redo the lighting in my home and was wondering if there are any tips I should keep in mind. Where are lights best placed and which kind of lights are good in the long term? Also, is worth investing in smart lights?
Intelligent lighting systems can be a little expensive but they work really well in the long run. You can set timers for lighting and control your lighting even with your smart devices. If you are thinking of redoing your lighting you should definitely consider this.
Lights in your bathroom, especially the ones on or around your mirror, should be facing you. This way you can clearly see your face, teeth and skin when washing or shaving etc.
When it comes to dining rooms the table should be well focused by light. Have a chandelier installed just on top of it and the rest of the room can have indirect lighting from lamps etc.
Your bedroom needs to have a cozy atmosphere which is best achieved by lamps. Do not have any lights that point directly towards the bed and even the lamps should be placed away from the bed, towards the corners.
In many homes the problem isn’t the sources of light through adjacent windows, rather the ability to let light in effectively. Take a look at your current window treatments. Heavy blinds, thick drapery and layered fabric curtains often keep out much-needed natural light. Consider using lighter-weight fabrics such as cotton or linen fabrics, especially in climates that allow moderate temperatures to filter in. For more extreme climates, opt for materials that are versatile and can be tied back to let in light or close when the sun is glaring or too bright.

Living Room
Light three of the four corners, focusing one of those lights on an object (art, a plant, a striking chair). Use a combination of table lamps and floor lamps, some with a downward glow and some that shine upward. Allow for reading in as many seats as possible with down-glowing lamps on three-way switches. If you have an overhead fixture, put it on a dimmer....
