Tip - Little black gnat type bugs

i can't say for sure where these came from, other than a houseplant, but they seem to be multiplying. i'd like to spray or something, but don't want to the hurt the plants or pets or people. any suggestions on what i can use to get rid of them in one fell swoop? thanks maryanne
