Long-term cost savings drive some Beaches residents toward greener options

After six months in his new Jacksonville Beach home, Mark Macco received a pleasant sight among his monthly expenses: a $50 utility bill. Apartment dwellers may be familiar with such low fees, but Macco now lives in a 4,350-square-foot house complete with two refrigerators. The building, wired with smart technology, controls its own internal temperature and gives him access to lighting and appliances via his iPad. Despite the advanced features — or perhaps because of them — Macco, the architect who designed the home, isn't surprised by the bill.
