Making Thin Hair Look Thicker

This is one major issue faced by both women and men. Being a beautician I get a lot of people who want to know how to make thin hair look thicker. I am creating this topic to collect the best tips from experts and the community on making thin hair appear thick. Hopefully this will become a valuable source of information and tips for anyone suffering from this problem.

Tip 1 - Use dark color for the base and go lighter as you reach the surface hair

Use a dark color for your base and hair near the scalp. Then as you move along the length, pick a lighter shade to create the impression of depth. This way the hair near the base will appear fuller and thicker because of the dark shade.

Tip 2 - Add volume with sea salt spray

You might not believe it, but sea salt spray actually works and can give your hair a lot of volume. If you are curling your hair, using salt spray can hold those curls throughout the whole day even. Check out the link I am sharing below for more details on this.

Tip 3 - Use hair extensions

Hair extensions are just used to add length to short hair but they can also add a lot of volume. You can get glue-in and clip-in extensions but the latter are more comfortable easier to use. Just get them in a color that matches your natural hair and clip them in before a big event or a party.

Tip 4 - Go for a layered hair cut

Your hair cut can do wonders for your thin hair. Get a layered haircut so that the volume of your hair increases and they become more bouncy. Longer hair weight more and highlight the thinness of your hair.

Tip 5 - Ask your hair stylist not to use a razor

Published:  | Submitted by Joanne | permalink

Most hair stylists use a razor to thin out thick hair and will do it regardless of whether your hair need thinning or not. Ask your stylist not to use the razor and instead make layers in your hair so that they are bouncy and voluminous.

Tip 6 - Use hair accessories like inserts

Published:  | Submitted by Shelley | permalink

There are a lot of hair accessories which can be used to make your hair appear thicker. Try out inserts like Bumpit, which lift your hair or if you are going for a bun hairstyle you can use sock buns to give the appearance of volume.

Tip 7 - Try getting bangs

Published:  | Submitted by Rebecca | permalink

If you have thick hair in the front you should try bangs to cover things up. You can also get the layer of hair under your bangs colored a little darker than your natural color so that they look thicker and give the impression of volume.

Tip 8 - Color your hair with peroxide

Published:  | Submitted by Nora27 | permalink

According to hair colorists, peroxide can double the thickness of each hair strand. Using it to color your hair will not only give you streaks which take attention away from your thin hair, but will also swell and thicken them to give a fuller feel.

Tip 9 - Don't style your hair using a flat iron

Published:  | Submitted by Alexis | permalink

Flat irons are the worst for thin hair because they make them look even thinner. When you have thin hair, you can't afford to straighten them with an iron. Instead, try curling them for some volume.

Tip 10 - Use mousse to add volume

Mousse is a great way to add volume to your hair without making it obvious. Get a light, dry mousse and just run up from the roots to give your hair a fluffy feel.

Tip 11 - Avoid using too much conditioner on your hair

If you must use a conditioner for your hair use it sparingly. Using too much conditioner will make your hair smooth and silky, which will consequently make them look thinner.

Tip 12 - Use a volumizing power or dry shampoo

Published:  | Submitted by Nina | permalink

There are several volumizing powders and dry shampoos available which you can use to give your hair volume. Just apply them from the roots upwards and your hair will be bouncy and fluffy, covering up any thin patches.

Tip 13 - Keep your hair above the shoulders

Published:  | Submitted by Jenny001 | permalink

Get your hair cut short so that they stay above your shoulders. Once they are long enough to hit your shoulders they will break up and look thinner. Shorter hair are also easily styled using mousse etc which can add volume.

Adding in some big curls will make your hairs look thicker too. Try applying curls with hot rollers or curling iron. If you don't want to give too much of the curl then give a bit bend at the end of your hairs.

Tip 15 - Avoid too much combing on your hairs

Using comb too much to set your hairs also result in breaking them so try to avoid doing it instead set your hairs with your fingers and use comb only when it's really required.

Tip 17 - Get multi-dimensional hair color

Published:  | Submitted by Emilia | permalink

Using a multi-dimensional hair color will mix things up and different strands of color will appear different under the same light. This will take attention away from your thin hair and prevent your hair from looking flat.

Tip 18 - Go for a messy hairstyle

If you can pull it off, try a messy hairstyle instead of straight smooth hair. This will not highlight your thin hair and will give the illusion of a fuller scalp and more volume.
