The character Laura Petrie, made famous by actress Mary Tyler Moore on the hit 1960s sitcom The Dick Van Dyke Show, revolutionized how the American public viewed the TV housewife simply through her sense of fashion. The once accepted homely and “mom-ish” getups of sitcoms past were replaced by the classic capri cigarette pants, fabulous flats, and form-fitting mod tops that Moore’s character donned in each episode. Laura Petrie was and continues to be the ultimate symbol of domestic femininity.
