Moving to United Kingdom for the First time as a Student

Hello Everyone, I am moving to UK from India as a student for my Master program in Imperial College London. Need some tips on what to carry, how to get accommodation, things to do and avoid in UK as a student and any other help in this regard will be really appreciated. Thanks.

Tip 1 - Summer / Winter Clothes + Laptop

Make sure you carry along both season clothes unless you plan to revisit India before the season changes. Usually the airlines allow 15 KG baggage and 7 KG hand carry.

Do not carry more than 2 packs of Cigarettes because its illegal.

Better bring your laptop along as I did a comparison and found that computers are cheap in India compared to UK.

Tip 2 - Make sure you carry your basic medications with you, you won't get them easily in UK

When headed to UK you should make sure you carry sufficient quantities of your basic medications for flu, throat infections, fever, cough, stomach issues, allergies and blood pressure etc. Here you won't be able to get them so easily and will have to go through checkups from general physicians and hospitals.

In my own experience, taking these medicines along was very helpful.

Tip 3 - Learn to cook a few traditional dishes

Learning some traditional dishes before coming here will be very useful, especially in the start when you will be spending money on a lot of other things. Moreover, you will soon get bored of takeaways and miss food from home.

Tip 4 - Get your Accommodation confirmed before you land to UK

The best practice is to get the university accommodation at an initial once you land to UK make some friends here and then switch to sharing accommodation this way you don't need to worry about anything at all. However, if you have any friends already here in UK ask them to help you in this reagrd

Tip 5 - Thing you must carry along

As per my experience I would suggest to carry along basic utensil such as Coffee Mug, 2 Plates, 2 Bowls, Knife, Spoon & Fork. Hangers, Blanket (unless you dont want to buy one from UK), couple of warm clothes, Umbrella, Rain coat, Long coat with some sweaters, t-shirts, jeans, formal dress one or two, tie as i saw in my university some guys were wearing it during presentations. Basic stationary such pens, writing pads, calculator, highlighter and pencils.

Hope this will help, I am sort of person who carry every possible thing which i might need along so my suggestion would be this.

Tip 6 - Accommodation off campus will be cheaper

Just keep in mind, on campus rates are always higher so I'm assuming you're father is not that rich to be paying hefty bills from India - stick to somewhere local near the university so traveling becomes easy on/off campus.

Share a flat/house if you need to, thats the way students live here in the UK
