Tips for Dealing With Aggressive Colleagues at Work

I recently joined a new company as a junior executive and some of the guys already working there have been very aggressive. I am okay with them not helping but they are actually making things difficult for me. Can someone tell me the best way to deal with such colleagues?

Tip 1 - Stay Calm and Cool, You are in control of your emotions.

Stay Calm and Cool, You are in control of your emotions.

The last thing you want is hostility or even revealing your weaknesses to them.  Go for a long walk, a cold shower, anything to avoid a confrontational situation. These colleagues plan and execute your fall, so don't give them the pleasure.

"Distance yourself emotionally from the problem and stay calm, collected and in control at all times. Don't get defensive or let negative feelings fester or boil over the top. Maintain your peace and objectivity by asking yourself what learning is to be had from the situation and latching on to the positive aspects of the relationship versus the negative at all times."

Tip 2 - Talk to your own supervisor

Your supervisor is the one you should be talking to in order to complain about such colleagues. You don't have to be critical and you can even seek advice on how to deal with them. Just take some private time out to discuss this.

Tip 3 - Warn them that you will complain to HR

If you feel someone crosses the line you can always warn them about an HR complaint. That usually gets people to back off.

Tip 4 - Just ignore them and continue your work

The best thing to do at the work place is to ignore any people you don't like. Its not the place for a confrontation, just let it go and focus on your work, thats the only thing that counts in the end.

Tip 5 - Keep everything transparent and do it all in writing

The best policy is to keep everything in writing and do everything transparently. This will protect you in case anyone wishes to harm you or go against you. You should always have proof of your own work.

Tip 6 - Stand up and let it be known that you won't take such behavior

If you are feeling bullied by a co-worker just stand up and give him/her a stern shut up call. You don't have to take such behavior.
