Tips for writing a great resume or CV

I downloaded a few resume templates online but they are all generic and look like every other resume. What do you guys think makes a cv really stand out? If you can please also share any tips, templates or samples I can refer to for making my own resume.

Tip 1 - Keep your CV to one page only

In my experience one-page resumes are more attractive and leave a better impression than those which are over multiple pages. Just condense all the information you want to give out and organize it effectively on one single page for the best results.

Tip 2 - Include a personal statement

Include a personal statement

"The personal statement is both highly underrated and highly underused so it's a great thing to get right and include on your CV. The point made here is spot on because we spend seconds reading a CV and that's not laziness, it's a necessity - we know what we are looking for and get hundreds every week. So including a short, sharp personal statement that neatly explains why your experience is relevant to the job you're applying to is a brilliant idea!"

Tip 3 - Sort your achievements and academic history by year

An unorganized CV can leave a really bad impression on your prospective employer. Always make sure your academic record and achievements are sorted by year and are in that order on the CV.

Tip 4 - Keep it short and to the point

Published:  | Submitted by Nelson | permalink

When interviewers are browsing through your resume they won't have time to read long stories about you. They will be skimming through all the information and you can help them by keeping it short.

Tip 5 - Don't exaggerate your achievements

Just list stats and facts and avoid rosy descriptions of your achievements. No one like exaggeration and it will only leave a bad impression on people who read your CV.
