Hypoxemia is defined as a condition where arterial oxygen tension or partial pressure of oxygen (PaO2) is below normal (normal value is between 80 and 100 mmHg). It can develop as a result of five main mechanisms: ventilation-perfusion mismatch, diffusion impairment, alveolar hypoventilation, right to left shunt and diffusion-perfusion abnormality.

When your body doesn't have enough oxygen, you could get hypoxemia or hypoxia. These are dangerous conditions.

Hypoxia and/or hypoxemia is a state or condition in which there is insufficient blood in the arteries. Causes include poisons, lung conditions (COPD, asthma, bronchitis); and symptoms include wheezing, sweating, coughing, shortness of breath, rapid breathing, and a fast heart rate.
