All states have mandatory workers' compensation laws to protect employees who get injured, sick, or killed on the job. In most states, businesses must accept the laws' provisions and provide the benefits. The insurance pays medical, disability, survivor's, and rehabilitation benefits, and in exchange, employees give up the right to sue. Most workplace injuries are covered on a no-fault basis--benefits are paid regardless of who is blamed for the accident. In some situations, employees are covered for accidents occurring outside the workplace.
