permalink The term Modern Rock was coined in the early 90s, as a mainstream radio format merging Alternative, Grunge, and Metal. Some early Modern Rock bands include Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Oasis and Red Hot Chili Peppers. Ironically, the term now encompasses many Post-Punk bands of late 70s and 80s.
